What is cloud hosting?

Cloud hosting is where your files or programs are installed on remote servers and you use the internet to access them. The servers are usually located all around the world and synchronized to allow better performance no matter where you are.

While this is not a new concept, faster internet speeds are making hosting your files in the cloud a much more viable option than before.

Some of the advantages of having your information hosted in the cloud are:

  • Better up-time. With your files spread in more locations it means there is less chance that your files will be unaccessable.
  • Less chance of data loss or corruption. Having your files in the cloud is much safer than having them on your computer. Viruses or power spikes can damage your files. Cloud storage stores your files multiple times across many computers decreasing the risk of loss. Some cloud services even store revisions of your files. Very useful if your document gets edited incorrectly.
  • Faster Speeds. The cloud can access your files from the closest server hosting them, meaning you should have fantastic download and upload speeds.
  • Better access. Cloud hosted applications allow you to not only have better and faster access, they also allow more people to access them. This can be great for a collaboration project shared between your team.
  • Synchronization. These days most cloud storage hosting options use synchronization to allow you work on your files directly from your computer, then synchronize the updated files back to the cloud. This means you can have all of you files synchronized from home to work or to share photos or documents with family and friends.
